What are Varicose Veins ?
Varicose veins can develop through a combination of weakened vein walls and faulty valves These are most commonly caused by hereditary factors, prolonged standing, obesity, etc.
The normally toned, elastic vein walls become weak and allow blood to flow backwards. One way valves in the veins can also fail to function properly.
This allows blood to pool and pressure to build up, which further weakens and subsequently damages the veins, causing them to become twisted, enlarged and painful.
40% of women and 25% of men suffer from this condition - but fortunately, treatment is available
Symptoms
• The appearance of spider veins or bulging veins
• Pain, heaviness and fatigue in the legs
• Swollen ankles and calves
• Burning or itching of the skin.
• Muscle cramping.
Diagnosis
• Physical exam while standing to check for swelling, varicosities & skin changes
• Doppler Ultrasound of leg veins to look for malfunctioning valves and exclude any blood clots in the veins (DVT).
